Koninginnedag the Wassenaarder-style

Every city in Holland celebrates BIG TIME for Queen's Day! Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, will be decorated in the National Colour of orange.
And if you like a good bargain, then you are in luck! On Queen's Day all of the Netherlands will turn into a giant garage sale! This is the only day of the year where you are allowed to sell items freely on the street, as well as play music, do acts/plays or what ever else tickles your fancy.

In Wassenaar you'll have to get up early to find a good spot to sell or perform on the Langstraat. There is something to do for everyone, and make sure you wear orange.

A car has crashed into a crowd watching a parade involving Dutch Queen Beatrix and her family, killing four people and seriously injuring several others.
The car careered into a monument after narrowly missing an open-topped bus carrying the royals.
No members of the royal family were hurt in the incident, in Apeldoorn, about 90km (56 miles) from Amsterdam.

Dutch officials said the driver, who was seriously hurt in the crash, appeared to have acted deliberately.
But after searching the car and his home, investigators ruled out terrorism as a motive.
They have not named the man, but said he was a Dutch national aged 38.

Spaghetti with Asparagus Rocket and Mushroom

Spaghetti with Asparagus Rocket and Mushroom

2 cloves garlic
1 tbsp olive oil
Spaghetti (or other long, thin pasta)
Sun-dried tomato, chopped
Chestnut mushrooms, sliced
Asparagus spears
Rocket leaves
1 cup Parmesan, grated
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
Toasted pine nuts
Salt
Freshly Ground Black Pepper

Bring water to a boil. When the water is boiling, add the pasta. Cook until al dente.
Mince the garlic very fine. Add the garlic and the oil to a small saucepan, and cook on low until the garlic is just golden. (Make sure the garlic doesn't turn brown - as it will become bitter). Add in sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms and asparagus. When cooked, remove from heat.
When the pasta is done, drain and return to the pot. Add the vegetables, cheese, and vinegar. Stir until well mixed, and add salt and pepper to taste. Serve into warmed bowls with some rocket leaves and pine nuts.

The Ward residence in Leiden

Ellen and her husband and two teenage boys have been living in the Netherland for the past 8 years.
They bought this charming townhouse situated in the quieter and historical part of Leiden town. The house was built in 1601, and it’s brimming with character.
Prior to moving to the Netherlands, the Wards have been living in the middle-east for a good part of their lives…. Hence, those fabulous collections of ethnic objet d’art found all over their beautiful home.
